The artwork is celebration of the colour red, laal, which has so much significance in the Indian cultural context. A legend narrates that Lord Krishna complained to his mother about the darkness of his skin compared to that of his consort Radha. As a result, Krishna’s mother smeared colours onto Radha’s face. This explains why today Holi is celebrated by throwing colours on people. The intentional use of elements and details of the lotus, unlike its natural habitat is placed within a rich red context is an elaboration of this sentiment.
